Industrious craftsmen, the Amish are worthy of some reflection. Their oak furniture is known for its quality. Amish gazebos are much sought after garden items. And Amish country in Pennsylvania is a popular tourist destination.
Lately, they've made the news because they're one of the few communities which tolerate genetically modified (GM) crops, namely tobacco. An upstart cigarette concern has developed a new cultivar lacking any addictive nicotine -- the idea being smokers will quit if their nicotine cravings go unanswered after smoking -- and the only farmers willing to grow it are Amish.
Series Description: Train Travels bring me here from time to time. Louisiana's big easy, it's a memorable town. The French influence is visible throughout.
