Willy Williams, an American Indian who I found one night seated peacefully outside the Macaroni Grill in Durham. He agreed to remain for the portrait, and entertained me with lively conversation.

For native Americans, life settlement has been turbulent to say the least. First the white man brought violence and disease. Then it was alcoholism. In the wake of all that disturbance, the few remaining indigenous populations have all but abandoned their original ways of life, in favor of the "civilized" route. It's been a lamentable process.
