An everpresent phenomenon in Los Angeles, the gloomy haze almost complements the shoreline. While the power plant does pierce the natural lines of the shore, it's the less obvious sources of air pollution that concern me: emissions from bunker-guzzling cargo ships, chemical clouds from China...

Apparently, the wide beaches here are artificial. Nourishment projects dredged and pumped copious quantities of sand onto the original shore. I wonder if that has anything to do with the dearth of Grunion spawning runs?
