From certain angles, Santa Monica's view of Malibu's beach can be both uncluttered and primitive -- devoid of all the human decrepitude that usually characterizes SoCal.

If you do plan on adding the beach to your list of attractions worth seeing, be sure to go in the summertime. In winter, heavy rains tend to wash a great deal of urban grime into the ocean. When the waters are brown, and plastic bags line the beach, you may not feel like taking a dip. Surprisingly, it cleans up nicely by May or June. I recall several occasions when the water at Santa Monica's beach was crystal clear.
